Do you ever wish you could just have a 5-minute glimpse into your future? Wouldn’t it be cool to get a teaser of where you are, what you are doing or even who you are with 3 years, 5 years or even 10 years from now?
There are days when things feel so surreal for me that I wonder if my past self got a glimpse into 5-minutes of my present what she would think. Would she be shocked, confused or excited? This is exactly how I felt last week because I just could not believe I was where I was, doing what I was doing.
3 years ago I was still debating if I should or should not quit my job. I had decided to stay on at my marketing role but was having second doubts. Then realizing my heart was no longer into what I was doing and my true passion lay in sugar art and being my own boss, I handed in my resignation at the end of April.
I was petrified, what was going to happen to me and my future? Will I make it alone? Will people actually like that I do? Or would I crash and burn within a year? I still remember on my last day as I left the building one of my managers jokingly said to me “come back and see us when you are ready to get a real job”. I laughed, but inside I was hoping he’d hold his promise because I’d envision I’d be crawling back begging for my old job within a year.
The days, weeks, months and years have flown by and sometimes I still can’t believe I am sitting here able to do what I love to do each and every day and amazingly getting paid for it too. There are days when I do wish I had a ‘real’ job like everyone else where I can take sick leave, real leave or even walk away when things get really tough but overall, even though I am working longer hours, I am happier and could not imagine going back to my ‘old’ life.
To say I am filled with gratitude for everyone that has supported and believed in me is an understatement.
A bear I met at the Denver Zoo. He’s so cute!
I will always be grateful to those who gave me a chance in this industry. The people who chose me to do their wedding/ birthday/ christening cakes, those who fought for me to be a preferred supplier at their venue, the magazine editors and bloggers who celebrated my work to the hosts who liked my work enough to give me the opportunity to teach overseas. And recently my gratitude extends to the team at Craftsy, who believed in me enough to open their doors and welcome me as part of their teaching team.
To say I was shocked that they even knew my work let alone who I was, was another understatement. Of course I am not fishing for compliments here, I do know that people know my work through social media and advertising, but seriously, sometimes I am truly flabbergasted by the extent of who. I didn’t expect people who where big industry leaders or people on the opposite side of the world to recognize little ol’ me creating cakes from my humble studio space. Really, I am very grateful and maybe just a little bit shy about it all.
So what is my point? Well, I am extremely excited to announce that I have been working on filming a class with Craftsy. In the last month, leading up to the filming of the class, I was really waiting for the ball to drop. Waiting for someone to pop around the corner shouting ‘gotacha! It’s all a joke’ to me. After all I just could not imagine that my class will one day be listed amongst some of the industry’s most respected and talented cake artists. You can imagine I felt about thissmall. I was a bundle of nerves. What if I make a fool out of myself? What if everyone thinks my ideas and techniques are stupid?
I teach regularly so you would think I would have a better grip on reality than that. But you know, sometimes my imagination just gets carried away and I end up thinking myself into a downward spiral.
Truth is, I have never felt more welcome than I did on the first day on set. Working like a well oiled machine everything that the team did not only made me feel so comfortable but also confidant. Everyone was so aware of what was happening and so incredibly organized. They had the same kind of passion for teaching and showing their audience all the details as I did and it was amazing to see how connected and concerned they were about the greater Craftsy community. As much as I was keen to share my knowledge and details, they were just as dedicated to capturing it all (though video close ups or stills) so that their students can truly experience it all.
Every step of the way was planned so that when filming started it all became a breeze. The first day was hard to adjust to, working out how to angle your body so the camera gets the best view, which camera to look at and how to explain yourself clearly without too many ums and ahs. It was tricky, but after the first day jitters, things just fell into place. You almost forget the cameras were there and get used to holding your body away from your work. You learn to speak and move a little slower so that everything really gets captured and by the end of the week I found myself really wishing that teaching on camera could be my full time job.
Each and every single one of the Craftsy team I met had a dedicated role and they all really immersed themselves into creating the best product possible. Their attention to detail was second to none, from making sure everyone was fed, ensuring the lighting was accurate, the items on the table correctly placed, the camera angle correct, the class materials accurate to the lessons being edited and presented in a cohesive manner. It was truly amazing to see them all at work and I now have a greater respect for all the planning and work that goes on behind the scenes before a class even goes live. Best of all when it all goes live, I will get to interact with all of you as well as see all the pictures you upload onto their website! So when you watch the class, it’ll be like I am there with you 🙂
So from the bottom of my heart thank you to Grace, Tonya, Jon, Shawn, Ivana, Danika and the rest of the Craftsy team for making the week such a fun and exciting experience 🙂
For now I can’t reveal the class content yet but I just wanted to share the experience with all of you and hope that you are just as excited about this next chapter in my journey as I am 🙂 When is the class going to be ready? Soon… I promise I will let you guys know first!
I just got back to Sydney yesterday and this is about how I feel right now!
